This is a do-it-yourself modification for the "About This Macintosh..." window
located in the Finder. This little patch will display a likeness of your Macintosh Model as well as the correct model name. Icons for the 7200 and 7500 are included with this tutorial, users will have to make their own.
Note: This has only been tested on the PowerMac 7200 and 7500 running Enabler 701 and System v7.5.2! I claim no responsibility for the hacks contained here. I enjoy editing resources with ResEdit and do not guarantee that this hack will work. I will
not be responsible for you hacking your Mac into little pieces.
1. Make copies of your System file and System Enable 701.
2. Open ResEdit
3. Open the Enabler 701 copy
4. Open the STR# resource packet
5. Open STR# -16395
6. Change the "Power Macintosh" to whatever you want it to be in the appropriate
fields (Fields 67,68,69,and108)
7. Close and Save the Enabler 701 copy
8. Open the System File Copy
9. Paste the Icon Resources Located in the accompanying resource file into the
System copy, making sure you say Replace when it asks you if you want to replace the
resources with conflicting IDs.
10. Close and Save the System Copy File
11. Put your original System and Enabler 701 files in the Trash (DO NOT EMPTY!)
12. Rename the duplicate files accordingly (System Copy to System and Enabler 701 Copy to Enabler 701)
13. Put files in your system folder and reboot
14. You can now empty the trash to dispose of your old files
That's it! Have fun and leave me some e-mail to give feedback on this hack.
